What is the relationship between culture and globalization - FAN JINGYU

 1. Cross border cultural flow

With the development of transportation, communication and the Internet, "culture", as a form of thought, value, custom, art, media products, flows from one country/region to another, forming the so-called "cultural globalization".

For example, film and television, popular music, fashion, brands, cuisine, etc. may all spread from a cultural center to the world.

2. Cultural interaction and hybridization

Globalization is not just about the dominant export of one culture to the world, but about the interaction, borrowing, and integration of multiple cultures, resulting in the emergence of new cultural forms.

For example, in music, elements popular in one place may blend into the traditional style of another region, forming a new sound; In fashion, Western tailoring is combined with local patterns.

3. Continuation and Transformation of Local Culture

Although globalization promotes the flow of culture, "local" cultures in various regions have not completely disappeared. People will preserve or reshape their cultural identity while being exposed to foreign cultures.

In short, 'the form may look similar (such as fast food restaurants, brand chains)', but 'the meaning/value behind it' still carries local cultural connotations.

2、 The opportunities brought by globalization to culture

Cultural dissemination and mutual understanding: Through globalization, different cultures have the opportunity to be exposed, understood, and appreciated by more people, which facilitates cross-cultural dialogue.

The stimulation of creativity and innovation: The collision of different cultural elements often gives rise to new art forms, products, and ideas. Globalization has provided a bigger stage for this.

Cultural and economic value enhancement: Cultural products (music, movies, tourism, design, etc.) may gain greater dissemination in the global market, thereby creating economic value.

3、 From the perspective of education/social research - why understanding this relationship is important

In the era of globalization, education, social sciences, and cultural studies are increasingly emphasizing "cross-cultural competence" and "cultural sensitivity".

At the policy and governance level, cultural policies, cultural industries, and cultural protection all need to consider the impact of globalization.

For example, cultural exports, cultural soft power, and protection of minority languages/traditional cultures.

At the enterprise/market level, understanding the relationship between culture and globalization can also contribute to international market strategies, brand positioning, and localization strategies.
