What is globalization?

What is [Globalization]?

The term "globalization" was first used by Anthony Giddens in the mid-1980s. Since then, this academic term has spread from scholarly discussions to everyday conversations among the general public. Globalization is considered both a development and an inevitable outcome of modernity.

Giddens' discussions on modernity and globalization encompass both the micro-level of individual life and identity and the macro-level structures of institutions. He defines globalization as "the intensification of worldwide social relations" , which links distant localities in such a way that events in one place can influence events in another.

Thompson defines globalization as "the growing interconnectedness of different parts of the world" , a process that results in complex forms of global interaction and interdependence. For example, the global financial crisis triggered by the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis in 2008 had a ripple effect on China's economy. In the southeastern Chinese city of Dongguan, many processing factories were forced to shut down as a result. These types of chain reactions are commonplace in the interconnected world of globalization.Next, we're going to talk about some of the specific aspects of globalization.

Globalization and Economy

The economic aspect of globalization is reflected in the strengthening of international trade relations, the globalization of capital markets, the rise of multinational corporations, and the prosperity of global financial markets. With the deepening of economic globalization, countries have become increasingly economically interdependent, with international trade serving as a crucial link that brings their economies closer. At the same time, more capital flows into international markets, promoting the globalization of capital markets. Multinational corporations have risen in prominence, crossing geographical boundaries to conduct business activities through cross-border investments and mergers. Consequently, global financial markets have flourished, with intensified cooperation and competition among financial institutions from different countries.

Globalization and Culture

Globalization has significantly enhanced cultural exchange and cooperation between nations. It fosters the survival and prosperity of cultural diversity while breaking down barriers to traditional cultures. Various forms of cultural exports and cultural convergence have become hallmarks of the globalization era. For example, Hollywood films from the United States are a quintessential representation of cultural exports and are among the most popular films worldwide. The development of tourism has facilitated cultural exchange between countries, providing opportunities for cultural integration. Additionally, the rise of global telecommunications networks and the internet has bridged the gap between different cultures, making cultural diversity increasingly possible.

Globalization and Society

In the social domain, globalization is manifested in its impact on social systems, social structures, and societal trends. It has diversified social structures, increased sources of information, and made information flow more convenient, thereby greatly improving everyday life for people. However, globalization has also introduced new social problems and challenges, such as unemployment and the widening gap between the rich and the poor.

Globalization and Politics

Globalization's influence on politics is mainly reflected in the strengthening of political connections and interdependence among nations, as well as the rise of transnational organizations. International organizations such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization are playing increasingly important roles in the era of globalization, and global political issues are becoming more prominent. At the same time, the pursuit of self-interest among nations has altered the dynamics of political competition, leading to diplomatic disputes and power struggles fueled by globalization.

Globalization and Environment

Globalization has also had a profound impact on the environment. Issues such as global warming and climate change have become some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. During globalization, energy consumption, production processes, and consumption patterns have exerted pressure and caused damage to the environment. The awakening of environmental awareness and the improvement of environmental laws and regulations have become prerequisites for sustainable globalization.
