Extra credit project: Suggestions for Improving the Experience of International Students

Studying abroad can be an exciting yet daunting experience, especially for international students. Adjusting to new languages, cultures, and academic environments can be challenging, but it also provides valuable opportunities for growth. Based on my own experiences as an international student in South Korea, I would like to share a few suggestions for improving the overall experience of international students in university settings. One of the biggest challenges I faced when taking English courses taught by both Korean and foreign professors was adjusting to different teaching methods. Some professors, especially Korean ones, used clear and concise language with plenty of visuals, which helped students like me grasp complex concepts. However, foreign professors often spoke at a faster pace, and the class discussions were more immersive, which could be intimidating at first. To improve this experience, universities should focus on training professors to better balance language complexity and clarity in their teaching, especially for students who are non-native English speakers. Using more visual aids and slowing down speech during important lectures can make a significant difference. Language is a critical tool for academic and social success. I’ve realized that simply attending English courses isn’t enough to build confidence in communication. More opportunities for practical language use, such as discussion groups, role plays, and speeches, can help international students overcome their fear of speaking and improve their language skills. A dedicated language support system that focuses on both academic writing and spoken English would be beneficial.
Additionally, organizing cultural exchange programs or social events would allow students to practice their language skills in a relaxed, informal setting. Studying in a multicultural environment provides an excellent opportunity for cultural exchange. However, it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or feelings of isolation. Universities can foster a more inclusive environment by organizing cultural events where students from different backgrounds can share their traditions and experiences. This would not only improve language skills but also promote a deeper understanding of diverse cultures, helping international students feel more at home. The adjustment to a new academic system can be overwhelming. Personalized academic support, such as mentoring or tutoring, can help international students navigate the challenges they face. Professors and teaching assistants can provide guidance on how to approach academic tasks, especially when it comes to understanding different assessment methods or writing in an academic style. These support systems can ease the transition and make the learning experience more rewarding. By implementing these suggestions, universities can create a more welcoming and supportive environment for international students, allowing them to thrive both academically and personally.
