Extra credit project: Experiences in an English-Language Class at a Korean University——ZHANG XIAORUI

Studying abroad is a transformative experience that offers opportunities to learn not only academically but also culturally and personally. As an international student in Korea, my experiences with English-language classes, learning wiki technology, and adjusting to a new life have been both challenging and rewarding. Here, I share my reflections and suggestions for improving the experiences of future international students.

1. Experiences in an English-Language Class at a Korean University

Taking English-language classes at a Korean university was an intriguing blend of familiarity and novelty. The lectures, delivered in English, offered me a comfortable medium of learning. However, I noticed unique cultural aspects, such as the emphasis on group projects and presentations. These activities encouraged collaboration with local and international peers, helping me to bridge cultural gaps.
2. Adjusting to Life in Korea

Adapting to life in Korea was an adventure filled with discoveries. From mastering public transportation to exploring local markets, each day presented new opportunities to learn. The language barrier was initially intimidating, but basic phrases and translation apps helped me get by.

3. Learning Wiki Technology

Learning wiki technology as part of the coursework was a unique and empowering experience. Creating, editing, and collaborating on a shared platform not only enhanced my technical skills but also taught me the importance of clear communication and organization.
At first, the interface seemed overwhelming, but step-by-step guidance from professors and peers simplified the process. Using a wiki to compile and present research encouraged active participation and fostered a sense of community within the class.

4. Suggestions for Improving International Student Experiences

  • Language Support: Offering free or affordable Korean language classes would greatly help students integrate into the community.
  • Orientation Programs: A comprehensive orientation covering cultural norms, academic expectations, and practical tips for living in Korea would ease initial anxieties.
  • Peer Mentorship: Pairing international students with local mentors could facilitate cultural exchange and provide guidance.

Conclusion

My experiences as an international student in Korea have been both challenging and enriching. The combination of academic learning, cultural immersion, and personal growth has been invaluable.
