1.Experiences in an English-Language Class at a Korean University
In one of my English courses this semester, I attended a class on media trends and globalization, which was a very memorable experience. In addition to giving me a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of globalization, I also learned a lot about Wikipedia editing, which was very helpful to me because it was my first time to edit Wikipedia. It opened up a new perspective for me. This was my first time to get an in-depth understanding of the operating mechanism behind Wikipedia, and I learned how to screen credible information and use objective language. This not only gave me a new understanding of the production methods of the media, but also cultivated critical thinking and information retrieval skills. This course also pays great attention to student participation and interaction, which I think is not only for students to think divergently, but also for students to exercise their oral skills. In this course, I also learned a lot about the media and how to find WVS data and websites, which I have never been exposed to before. In short, I learned a lot of knowledge and content in new areas in this course.
2.Adjusting to Life in Korea
When I first arrived in Korea, the most difficult thing was the language. Although I had learned Korean for a while, it was still difficult to have a conversation. However, later on, by actively participating in language courses and interacting with local Koreans, I gradually improved my Korean level. When shopping and taking public transportation, I also tried to express my needs in Korean, from simple greetings and asking for directions to complex ordering and discussing things. Every attempt was an improvement. In fact, there was not much discomfort in terms of food, except for kimchi. In Korea, there are spicy cabbage side dishes when eating out. At first, I felt spicy and sour, but as time went by, I slowly appreciated its deliciousness. Now I also gradually like to explore traditional markets and restaurants in Korea and try all kinds of novel dishes. In addition, there is also the annoying garbage sorting, because the garbage sorting in Korea is very detailed. For example, kitchen waste needs to remove liquids and cannot contain impurities such as plastics; recyclable garbage needs to be cleaned and sorted, such as separating bottle caps from plastic bottles, and it is also necessary to use garbage bags that meet regulations. For people who have just arrived in Korea, this not only requires extra time to learn, but also requires attention to ensure correct operation. However, as time went by, my understanding of this system gradually deepened. I began to understand and agree with the importance of garbage classification, and gradually became proficient in garbage classification.
3.Learning Wiki Technology
Through learning about wiki, I learned how to filter, refine and organize a large amount of fragmented information into a logically rigorous and well-organized content. When I first came into contact with Wiki technology, there were many things I didn't understand, such as how to add hyperlinks, cite literature, and use templates. Later, through practice, I gradually learned the core functions and learned how to add credible references. And from the often mentioned "verifiability", I also learned the rigor of editing wiki content.
4.Suggestions for Improving International Student Experiences
①Use media resources to learn the language: Improve listening and language sense by watching Korean TV programs, movies, variety shows, etc.
②Participate in traditional festivals and cultural activities: Actively recommend students to participate in Korean traditional festivals and feel the charm of Korean traditional culture. In addition, you can also organize visits to Korean folk villages to experience traditional activities such as making kimchi and rice cakes, and gain a deeper understanding of Korean folk culture.
③Make full use of school resources: Schools usually provide international students with rich learning resources, such as libraries, laboratories, learning centers, etc., and make full use of these resources to improve learning efficiency. In addition, you can also participate in learning support programs provided by the school, such as academic writing tutoring, professional course lectures, etc., to improve academic level.
④Actively promote club activities: Actively promote club activities, so that you can get to know classmates from different majors and backgrounds, expand your interpersonal network, enrich your extracurricular life, and relieve learning pressure.
⑤Participate in language courses and learning activities: The school provides Korean language courses for international students, so that students can actively participate in these courses and systematically learn Korean grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. In addition, you can actively promote and participate in language exchange activities organized by the school, communicate one-on-one with local Korean students, and learn each other's language and culture, which will help improve oral expression skills and understanding of Korean culture.
