Extra credit 2:Adjusting to Life in Korea(YANGPEIFU)

1. summary

I think I can demonstrate my adaptation process to life in Korea through the following five aspects:

Clothing: Korean fashion styles are diverse and the trend changes quickly. In daily wear, young people tend to prefer simple and fashionable combinations, such as slim fit jeans, simple T-shirts or shirts, paired with sneakers or casual leather shoes, etc. In formal occasions such as academic lectures, business events, etc., it is necessary to wear a more formal suit or appropriate dress. For international students from southern China like me, it is important to note that winter in Korea is relatively cold and snowy, so it is important to prepare warm down jackets, thick sweaters, scarves, gloves, and snow boots. This is very different from the relatively mild winter clothing requirements in the south.

Food: Korean cuisine is rich and diverse, with famous dishes such as kimchi, miso soup, stone pot mixed rice, grilled meat, etc. There are many traditional Korean restaurants around the school or on the streets and alleys, with affordable prices. But if you miss the taste of hometown, you can find relatively authentic Chinese cuisine such as Sichuan and Cantonese at Anshan Station and Chinatown in Seoul. In addition, there are also many Western and Japanese restaurants to choose from in South Korea. However, the overall taste of Korean cuisine tends to be sweet, spicy, and salty. For southern international students who are accustomed to light flavors, it may take some time to adapt. For example, at the beginning, they may feel that the spiciness of kimchi is too strong, but gradually they may like this unique flavor after trying it out.

Accommodation: Most international students choose to live in school dormitories or off campus examination centers, apartments, etc. School dormitories generally have complete facilities, such as public kitchens and laundry rooms, but the application process may be difficult and the quantity may be limited. The examination hall has smaller space but relatively cheaper prices, with basic furniture and appliances, and is mostly for single occupancy. The living environment of the apartment is good, with different layouts to choose from, but the rent is relatively high. In terms of accommodation arrangements, it is important to understand in advance the safety of the surrounding environment, the convenience of transportation, and the completeness of living facilities, such as whether there are supermarkets, banks, etc. nearby. Therefore, I chose the apartment closest to the school, which is safe and does not require a long walk or convenient transportation.

Okay: South Korea's public transportation is  developed, with a wide coverage of subway networks that can reach almost every corner of the city. Station signs are available in Korean, English, and Chinese for easy understanding. Buses are also very convenient, but the routes are relatively complex and require prior knowledge. In addition, taxis are also more convenient, but there may be traffic congestion during peak hours. For international students, it is necessary to apply for a transportation card to enjoy certain discount benefits. On snowy days in winter, public transportation may experience delays or temporary adjustments. It is necessary to pay attention to relevant information in advance and make reasonable travel plans.

Language: Korean is the official language of South Korea. Although Chinese services are available in some tourist attractions, shopping malls, and other places, mastering Korean is still very important in daily life and learning. I learned some basic Korean language knowledge in advance in China, and after arriving in Korea, I participated in Korean language courses at school or outside the school for systematic learning. In daily communication, it is best not to be afraid of making mistakes and to communicate more with local Koreans, starting with simple greetings and shopping exchanges, gradually improving your Korean proficiency. For some professional courses, English is taught, but the application of Korean in extracurricular life is still very extensive.

2. Project

Regarding entertainment, beauty treatments are a must for us girls because beauty in Korea is more developed and affordable, which attracts many international students. There are also concerts by favorite celebrities such as idol shows, and meet and greet events that are very attractive to international students. Overall, adapting to Korean life will be relatively easy, not very difficult.

3. Question

I don't know how the classmates in the class adapted to life in Korea?
