Extra credit 1:Experiences in an English-Language Class at a Korean University(YANGPEIFU)

1. Summary

In the English classroom at a Korean university, I gained a unique learning experience full of surprises. Fortunately, the Piotr professor maintains a tolerant attitude and does not demand that we achieve complete grammar accuracy and absolute pronunciation standards in classroom communication, which to some extent alleviates the tension of learning and reduces the difficulty of English classes. The atmosphere in the classroom is relatively relaxed and comfortable as a result. Students are no longer afraid to speak up due to the fear of making mistakes, and can express their ideas more freely. Although there may be some grammatical flaws or awkward pronunciation in their speech, everyone is focused on the transmission and communication of ideas. However, being in South Korea, I use Korean extensively in daily communication. As a Chinese, Chinese is my mother tongue. In such an environment of frequent language switching, my language system often falls into a state of disorder. Whenever interacting with professors, I often unconsciously switch back and forth between English, Korean, and Chinese, and my thinking jumps in the logic of different languages. For example, when discussing an academic topic, the previous sentence may still be explaining the viewpoint in English, and the next sentence may switch over because a certain concept has a more familiar expression in Korean. Then, it may briefly speak Chinese because it wants to quote a famous Chinese saying. The interweaving and interweaving of these languages not only brought some small interludes to communication, but also disrupted my English learning. When it comes to creating projects such as Wikipedia in this English class, we face many difficulties. On the one hand, it is challenging to communicate the details, methods, and content of the project with the professor in English. When explaining one's ideas for the structure of Wikipedia pages, one should strive to organize complex English sentences in their mind, while also ensuring accurate communication of project related professional terminology and logical relationships. A slight lack of attention can lead to confusion or unclear wording. On the other hand, it is not easy to remember the various norms and extensive

information content produced by Wikipedia, and there are often situations where one thing is overlooked.Fortunately, there are also some conveniences. The professor allowed us to discuss project issues in depth through exchanging emails, which gave us ample time to think and organize language, avoiding the tension and language confusion that may arise during face-to-face communication. Moreover, the discussion page (User talk:Hanyangprofessor2) on the Wikipedia website provides us with a great platform for communication, where we can record and exchange ideas, progress, and issues related to the project at any time, facilitating information sharing and collaboration among team members and professors.Overall, although this English course at a Korean university was full of challenges, it also provided me with a unique learning experience and growth opportunity amidst various difficulties and conveniences. Whether in terms of language proficiency improvement or project practice, it has not been ignored.

2. Project

The professor has interactive projects in every class about sociology and the production of Wikipedia, such as searching for Wikipedia:Reliable sources and links, as well as assigning learning translations for articles that do not have Chinese, English, or Korean. These projects involve English and are both difficult and very interesting.

3. Question

How to effectively overcome the difficulty of communicating with professors in English during the Wikipedia project production process caused by multilingual switching and improve the quality of project completion in English classes at Korean universities?
