Extra credit blog: China and globalization —— GUANYUE

Is globalization good for China?

Globalization has significantly benefited China since its reform and opening-up. By integrating deeply into global markets, China has grown into the world’s second-largest economy. Through globalization, China became the "world's factory," accumulating wealth by exporting manufactured goods. International investments, technology transfer, and participation in global supply chains have helped China upgrade its economy. Articles from The Economist highlight how China's Belt and Road Initiative has extended its global influence, providing infrastructure support to developing countries while strengthening its role in the global economy. However, globalization also brought challenges such as environmental pollution, regional economic imbalances, and reliance on global markets. Recently, geopolitical tensions and trade barriers from developed countries have made China’s globalization path more complicated. While globalization has undoubtedly benefited China, a more flexible and sustainable approach is needed for the future.

Is China good for globalization?

China has made significant contributions to globalization. As the largest manufacturing hub, China provides affordable goods, reducing costs for global consumers. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road, China has boosted economic growth in many countries and strengthened trade connections. According to The Economist, China's advancements in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and the digital economy have also added new momentum to globalization. However, China’s rise has caused concerns in some countries, particularly regarding intellectual property, market access, and geopolitical competition. These issues sometimes make China’s role in globalization complex and controversial. To continue supporting globalization, China needs to strengthen international cooperation, follow global rules, and demonstrate greater transparency and responsibility.
