Blog3: What is the relation between politics and globalization? - Jeongeun Park

Einstein, who was shocked by the atomic bombing in 1945, said, "The only way to save humanity and civilization depends on the creation of a world government." Although he was criticized for his unrealistic remarks, he once again emphasized the importance of world government, saying, "If the idea of a world government is not realistic, there is only one realistic prospect for our future. It is total human destruction."

The term "world government" that Einstein referred to means "political globalization" in which a subject responsible for the global order appears, just as a national government is responsible for the order within a country. Globalization, which we have been talking about for the past 20 years, means only economic globalization. It was not looking at true "globalism," but aimed at expanding "individualism" through the destruction of the country. If the past blog 2 focused on the relationship between economy and globalization, this blog will focus on the relationship between politics and globalization.

The relationship between politics and globalization is complex and multifaceted, as globalization influences political systems, and politics shapes the trajectory of globalization.

First and foremost, we need global governance.

Globalization requires international cooperation to address global issues such as climate change, trade, migration, and security. Institutions such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the International Monetary Fund will act as political responders to establish policies at the global level, reflecting the political need to manage interconnected systems. Also, when national sovereignty is taken into account, the integration of global markets and transnational issues can challenge a nation's authority as decisions become more diverse under international agreements. Importantly, governments must strike a balance between maintaining sovereignty and participating in global systems. Some political movements advocate nationalism in response to perceptions of the loss of sovereignty.

The economy and society, where political globalization and interconnectedness clearly exist, should not be ignored either.

In terms of economic policy, political globalization influences free trade, multinational corporations, and international investment influences domestic economy and policy-making. In addition, politics determines the degree of openness to global markets through tariffs, trade agreements, and regulations. Populist and protectionist policies often arise in response to the economic impact of globalization. We can think about cultural and social dynamics. The spread of ideas, cultures, and technologies affects local identity and social cohesion. Politicians can leverage the cultural impact of globalization to promote agendas such as inclusivity or traditionalism, depending on popular sentiment.

"Is it possible to happen war in the 21st century?"

Unfortunately, this is a reality. We are now in the midst of World War I and World War II, which made the world miserable. After the war ended, we faced the Cold War due to the confrontation of political systems, namely, American liberalism and Soviet communism. Now, the Cold War era has arrived again. The Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas war... As such, the whole world is under threat of terrorism, war, and aggression. Globalization promotes both international cooperation and transnational threats such as terrorism and cyberattacks. Governments cooperate with global security measures while implementing policies to protect their national interests, sometimes causing tensions in international relations. In this U.S. presidential election, Republican Trump won the election. Trump's main policy ideology of "America First" caused tension in international relations by setting up a firewall to prevent Mexican immigrants and imposing hefty tariffs on China.

To conclude, globalization and politics are mutually influential. Globalization sets the stage for political action on a transnational scale, while politics determines the pace and nature of globalization through policies and governance structures. Understanding this dynamic helps explain many contemporary global challenges and political debates.
