Blog2:What is the relation between culture and globalization?—XU YAN

As a trend, globalization has inevitably had a profound impact on the cultures of various countries and regions. The development of globalization has made exchanges between different countries more frequent and close, and exchanges and integration between various cultures are inevitable.

What Tomlinson calls "non-territorial expansion" means that globalization is no longer just the flow of economic and commodity factors around the world, but has fundamentally changed the relationship between cultural experience and cultural identity. Such changes have made globalization a part of daily life.

From Tomlinson's discussion, we can see the characteristics of cultural globalization. First, globalization brings about the gradual homogenization of culture, and the intimacy brought about by cultural globalization. For example, in the film industry, Hollywood movies are well-known everywhere, and countries gradually introduce Hollywood movies, making people more and more familiar with the style of Hollywood movies and reducing the sense of unfamiliarity. Including the shooting style and visual effects of movies, they are gradually becoming well-known to audiences in various countries, and the film culture is gradually becoming consistent. This phenomenon has gradually promoted cultural integration. Including fast food culture such as KFC, which has also rapidly occupied the Asian catering industry. Second, Tomlinson's non-territorial expansion, as a unique cultural experience, breaks the positioning relationship between traditional cultural experience and local territory, allowing people to come into contact with cultures that originally belonged to other regions in completely different geographical environments. In other words, non-territorial expansion reshapes people's sense of belonging and experience of culture, so that culture is no longer limited to the original region, and culture can cross geographical boundaries. Through social media, a globally circulated medium, people can cross cities and countries to understand different cultures around the world. For example, Korean culture has formed a cross-cultural phenomenon in its global dissemination.

The impact of globalization on culture is complex and diverse. Globalization can promote communication and understanding between different cultures, help break down cultural barriers, and to some extent promote the diversified development of culture. However, globalization has also brought about a certain degree of cultural homogeneity, causing some traditional cultures to be impacted and eroded. Under the wave of globalization, some cultures may gradually lose their heritage.
