 What is the relation between culture and globalization?

In John Tomlinson's "Cultural Globalization," the relationship between culture and globalization is seen as an interwoven dynamic process. Globalization is not just an economic, political, or technological phenomenon, it profoundly influences the dissemination, development, and transformation of culture. Tomlinson believes that the cross-border flow and mutual influence in the process of globalization have made culture no longer limited to locality, but spread and mutate globally through various media and channels. During this process, different cultures come into contact, mix, and reinterpret each other, leading to an increase in cultural diversity and interdependence.


Globalization has led to the coexistence of cultural homogenization and cultural diversity. On the one hand, the diffusion of Western culture has promoted cultural convergence, such as the popularity of Hollywood movies and fast food culture; On the other hand, local cultures also utilize globalization platforms to showcase their characteristics and export their culture, reflecting the tension between local and global cultural identity. In addition, cultural globalization has led to changes in individual identity recognition. People are not only influenced by local culture, but also shaped by transnational culture, forming multiple cultural identities.


I think the relationship between culture and globalization is like a continuous dialogue, where the boundaries of culture become blurred and flexible in the dual pull of assimilation and diversity. Although this dialogue is full of challenges, it also brings unprecedented possibilities for redefining and creating culture.

The book proposes that globalization is not a one-way process, but a non-linear and complex network. In this network, communication between different cultures is multidimensional, with various forces intertwined to drive cultural development and change.
