Reading 3: “What is the relation between politics and globalization?” —TANG YINI

In the article Political Globalization, authors Gerard Delanty and Chris Rumford explore the impact of globalization on politics and its multidimensional relationships. They point out that political globalization involves transnational processes beyond national borders, emphasizing the compression of space and time.

 1. Global Geopolitics: One major dimension of political globalization is the geopolitical landscape of global power. This involves power competition among different nations, especially major powers. Although the United States is seen as a global hegemon, it faces challenges from other centers of power. Globalization has not diminished the influence of nation-states; instead, it has subjected them to the pressure of transnational forces and facilitated the emergence of new polycentric networks of power.

2.Global Normative Culture: Another dimension is the rise of a global normative culture, such as human rights and environmental issues. This global culture transcends traditional state power and influences political communication on a global scale. While globalization promotes the spread of democracy, it also fosters global civil society and transnational courts, challenging state sovereignty. Nation-states are no longer the sole implementers of global norms, as global civil society and NGOs increasingly play a key role in global governance.

3. Polycentric Networks and Global Governance: Political globalization also involves polycentric networks of global governance that go beyond traditional forms of state politics. These networks are mobilized through international NGOs (such as Greenpeace) and transnational social movements, not only promoting social justice and environmental protection but also introducing new sources of instability, such as terrorism and global criminal organizations.

Overall, political globalization creates complex interactions between nation-states, global forces, individual rights, and global civil society. While globalization enhances the possibilities for democracy and global cooperation, it also weakens national sovereignty and diversifies global governance structures.
