Reading 2: What is the relation between culture and globalization?—TANG YINI

In the article Cultural Globalization, John Tomlinson explores the complex relationship between culture and globalization. Globalization is a multidimensional process that not only involves economics, politics, and technology, but also culture. In this process, globalization promotes intercultural connections, allowing different cultures to interact and integrate through commodities, information, technology, and other channels. This global connectivity accelerates the flow and mutual influence of cultures. Tomlinson points out that culture is not passively influenced by globalization but actively shapes the globalization process. Culture, by affecting people’s actions and choices, participates in global economic and social systems. Therefore, globalization is not simply the imposition of one culture upon another, but a process through which different cultures intertwine, creating new cultural forms and experiences. Globalization has brought about the “deterritorialization” of culture, meaning that culture is no longer tied solely to a specific geographic region but begins to transcend territorial boundaries, forming cross-national and cross-regional cultural interactions. At the same time, cultural identities within globalization are evolving, as traditional regional cultures start to merge with global cultural influences, forming diverse identities. The relationship between globalization and culture is not just one of globalization impacting culture; they are intertwined and mutually shaping processes. Culture spreads through globalization, while also shaping the globalization process in return.
