JIHAIYUN----Reading 4: What is the relationship between the economy and globalization?

1. Summary

In Peter Dicken's Economic Globalization, the relationship between the economy and globalization is deeply explored. Globalization is defined as a multi-dimensional process that affects the economic activities of countries, firms and individuals. First of all, the core feature of economic globalization is the global expansion of transnational corporations. These companies not only operate in multiple countries, but also set up production bases, sales outlets and research and development centers in different regions, forming a complex global production network. Through foreign direct investment, these companies allocate resources globally, enabling efficient flows of capital, technology, and labor.
Economic globalization has made the economic links between countries increasingly close, and has brought many positive effects. For example, the expansion of international trade has boosted economic growth and raised the standard of living in all countries. Cooperation between developed and developing countries is also increasing, contributing to the overall development of the global economy through investment, technology transfer and market opening. However, economic globalization is not without its challenges. It often leads to an increase in economic inequality between regions, and the economic gap between developed and developing countries is likely to widen further. In the pursuit of profit maximization, multinational corporations may neglect environmental protection and social responsibility, leading to social and ecological problems on a global scale.
At the same time, economic globalization has also led to greater external influence on national economic policies. National sovereignty is weakened, and governments need to consider the reaction of global markets and the needs of multinational corporations when formulating economic policies. In this context, the competition between countries is not only reflected in the contest of economic strength, but also in how to attract foreign investment and establish a good business environment. Countries have had to adapt their policies flexibly to the opportunities and challenges posed by globalization.
The other side of globalization is the cultural and social changes it brings. With the globalization of economic activities, cultural exchanges and collisions are becoming more frequent. While globalization promotes cultural diversity, it can also lead to the demise of local cultures. The integration of different cultures has changed people's lifestyle, values and consumption habits, forming a new global culture. However, this process of cultural mixing is not always equal, and the influence of a stronger culture may marginalize a weaker culture.
In my understanding, the relationship between the economy and globalization is interdependent. Globalization promotes economic development, and economic development provides the impetus for globalization. In this process, countries, enterprises and individuals are constantly adapting and adjusting to meet the opportunities and challenges brought by globalization. Therefore, understanding economic globalization requires attention not only to economic data and trends, but also to the social, cultural, and political factors behind it. This process is dynamic and complex, involving the interest game and cultural integration among countries.

2. Interesting points
An interesting point is that the operation of multinational companies is not always as simple and uniform as the outside world believes. Although multinational corporations operate globally, they are still influenced by the cultural, legal and market conditions of individual countries and regions. The business environment of different countries has a significant impact on the company's business strategy, which makes me realize that economic globalization is not a one-way road, but a dynamic process full of complexity and diversity. In addition, the cultural integration in the process of globalization makes me understand that local culture does not disappear in the tide of globalization, but is redefined and transformed in the process of interacting with global culture.
