JIAHIYUN-- Reading 3 What is the relationship between politics and globalization?

1. Summary

In The Globalization of Politics, John Tomlinson and Chris Rumford explore the complex and intertwined relationship between politics and globalization. They point out that globalization is not a one-way process, but a multi-dimensional dynamic interaction. This interaction not only involves the economy and culture, but also profoundly affects the political structure and social relations. Globalization has led to a shift in state power, promoting the spread of international norms, laws and human rights. This phenomenon makes the state need to redefine its role and power under the pressure of globalization.
An important aspect of political globalization is the global spread of democracy. With the popularity of democratic values, more and more countries are introducing democratic elements into their political systems, although in some regions the shift faces cultural and political resistance. The political framework of globalization has made relations between states more complex, with the sovereignty of many states being eroded on the one hand and the rise of global civil society offering new perspectives on local and global governance on the other. The state is no longer the only political entity; ngos, international institutions, and local movements are also constantly shaping political discourse.
Another dimension of globalization is the rise of a global culture of norms. Issues such as human rights, environmental protection and sustainable development are increasingly at the center of global discussions, which not only challenges national sovereignty, but also requires states to assume more responsibilities in global governance. The formation of this global norm is an important result of the participation of non-Western countries in the global dialogue, reflecting the importance of culture and values in politics.
Moreover, a striking feature of political globalization is the emergence of polycentric networks. In modern societies, political activity is increasingly not dependent on traditional state systems, but is formed through transnational networks, social movements, and citizen action. This centralized political structure means that power is not only concentrated in the hands of the state, but that local communities, international organizations, and global civil society are all able to play an important role in global affairs. This opens up more opportunities for political engagement, while also increasing the complexity of policymaking.
In my understanding, the relationship between politics and globalization is an evolving process. With the deepening of globalization, the boundaries between national and local have become blurred, and the diversity of political actors has increased. While globalization may bring about some reduction in state power, it also provides new opportunities for more voices to be heard. In this process, the state needs to adapt to the new global environment and re-examine its place and role in global politics.

2. Interesting points
One interesting point is the rise of a "global culture of norms". This includes not only issues of human rights and environmental protection, but also new social movements and civic action. Such changes have made me realize that while globalization brings many challenges, it also provides a platform for the exchange of different cultures and values. Through these new forms of communication, the boundaries between countries become blurred and more actors are able to play a role in global politics. This shows that the face of politics is constantly changing, showing a trend of diversification and complexity.
