Blog 2:What is the relation between culture and globalization

Culture and globalization can be said to be a closely related relationship. Globalization means connecting those living in the lives of modern society to each other. Globalization is caused and accelerated by various causes such as technological development, movement of people, and communication. The more globalization occurs, the higher the connection people have. In other words, sharing that creates common experiences with each other occurs more frequently than before. In this respect, the element of culture plays an important role. Culture is a way of life for humans. As various people live their lives, culture is formed. After all, since human life itself becomes a culture and human beings are social animals living together, everyone is creating a culture, and globalization takes place as they share it.

There are positive aspects to the process of globalization of culture. Because culture is globalized in today's society, people can enjoy food, clothing, songs, and works that did not exist in their own country, and these experiences allow them to feel emotions that cannot be easily experienced by one person and make them memorable. In Korea, "Parasite," which won the Palme d'Or, or "Squid Game," which wrote records on Netflix, served as a ‘soft power’ that made Korea a more attractive country. Of course, there are not only positive aspects. A culture derived from one country can have a uniform effect on everyone through a common experience, and a culture that is closed or discriminatory can't always have a good effect, so spreading a culture to another country can result in a decrease in the happiness of a country where it has spread. In addition, since it is natural that the power of a country that is strong economically or militarily influences it compared to that of a country that does not in the process of globalization, the gap between powerful countries and developing countries may widen. This development can foster hostility toward each other's countries, so globalization rather leads to a psychological distance between countries.

In this process, we need a story about global citizenship. Global citizenship emphasizes the meaning of the word 'global village'. Although we are born differently, we live harmoniously in one village, Earth. Different cultural feelings clearly exist. However, we should not have an ethnic-centered attitude, but an inclusive sensibility that we can share with others. This means that we should have an attitude to understand each other. In order to understand each other, we need to increase communication in the true sense. In the end, this means that the value of communication will soon be higher than before. We should get rid of the behavior of loathing and rejecting people who have different characteristics than ourselves.

In the past, McLuhan defined 'media is a message'. This means that the meaning of the message accepted by the audience varies depending on the shape of the medium. In the future world, media will not only become a message, but also money, that is, power and competitiveness. We will have to be careful that this power is not abused. This attitude starts from a very small part. As the song says, 'Revolution starts from bed.'
