Blog 2: What is the relation between culture and globalization?-HUANG QIHAO

As an international student, I have personally experienced the impact of globalization on culture and have deeply felt how it shapes my personal growth, cultural identity, and daily life. Studying abroad is not only an academic pursuit but also a profound cultural experience. Living in a foreign country, I encounter students and cultures from different nations and regions every day, which makes me more aware of cultural diversity and the far-reaching effects of globalization.

Firstly, globalization enables me to interact with classmates from all over the world in the classroom, broadening my academic perspective. I not only learn knowledge from different countries' educational systems but also engage in discussions and interactions that expose me to diverse ways of thinking and values. This cultural exchange has helped me realize that culture is not a singular entity, but a multi-layered and dynamic process. For instance, in my international trade class, I discuss global market dynamics with students from various countries, which deepens my understanding of the influence globalization has on the economies, cultures, and societies of different nations.

At the same time, living abroad has made me realize the importance of cultural identity. In the context of globalization, I need to maintain the unique features of my Chinese culture while also adapting to and integrating with the local culture. The formation of this dual cultural identity has made me appreciate my native culture even more and has taught me to respect and understand other cultures. In the multicultural environment I am part of, everyone is encouraged to keep an open mind, appreciate, and respect different cultures. This cultural atmosphere has helped me better adapt to new cultures and build friendships with people from diverse backgrounds.

However, globalization also presents challenges. One significant issue is cultural homogenization. I have noticed that some traditional cultures are gradually being marginalized under the influence of the dominant local culture. For example, I have observed that certain languages, customs, and even traditional skills are at risk of disappearing in some foreign settings. In such an environment, as an international student, I have become more aware of my responsibility to protect and preserve my own culture. While I gain a lot of new knowledge and experiences from learning and adapting to foreign cultures, I still place great importance on maintaining and promoting Chinese culture. For example, I share Chinese holiday customs, traditional foods, and historical stories with my foreign friends, which not only enhances their understanding of Chinese culture but also helps me appreciate the uniqueness of my own culture.

Overall, studying abroad has clarified the interrelationship between globalization and culture. Globalization fosters the exchange and fusion of different cultures, but it also brings challenges. Throughout this process, I have learned how to strike a balance in the wave of globalization: on one hand, I accept and adapt to new cultures, enriching my worldview; on the other hand, I maintain respect and pride for my own culture and strive to protect and pass it on. This cross-cultural experience has not only enhanced my personal abilities but also expanded my understanding of the world.
