Reading 2: What is the relation between culture and globalization?— LAOXINYI

1) Summary

In John Tomlinson’s article on Cultural Globalization, the relationship between globalization and culture is explored through various lenses. Globalization is defined as a multi-dimensional process of increasing global connectivity that affects economic, political, cultural, and technological developments (especially media and communication technologies). An important point in this article is that cultural is the most important field, that economic and cultural processes are intertwined, and that culture is not only affected by globalization, but also shapes globalization.

This article mentions several important concepts in cultural globalization for explanation:

- Cultural Imperialism: Globalization has spread Western (especially American) consumer culture around the globe, which is often seen as "cultural imperialism." However, Tomlinson criticizes this simplistic view, arguing that local cultures tend to adapt or resist these global influences.

- Deterritorialization:The weakening of the link between culture and location. With increased global connectivity, people are now incorporating global influences into their local lives, blurring the lines between local and global cultures.

- Cultural Identity: Globalization does not erode cultural identity but rather redefines it, often fostering stronger local attachments even as global influences increase.

- Cosmopolitanism: Tomlinson suggests a cosmopolitan approach to globalization, blending global mutuality with respect for cultural differences.

2) New, Interesting, or Unusual Items

Deterritorialization was a new concept for me, emphasizing how localities maintain distinctiveness even as global forces permeate them. This suggests a paradox where globalization intensifies local identities rather than dissolving them.

3) Question, Concern, or Discussion

One question that arises from Tomlinson's analysis is: How sustainable is this balance between global interconnectedness and the preservation of distinct local cultures in the long run?
