Blog1: What is globalization?

In the 21st century, as globalization progresses rapidly in various fields, such as the media industry and the IT field, I believe that there might be no one who doesn't know the word "globalization." Nevertheless, it is questionable whether they know exactly what globalization is.

According to Roland Robertson and Harrison White, emphasizes different aspects of the global interconnectedness in sociology and cultural theory. While both of them recognize the sweeping influence of globalization, their perspectives separate in meaningful ways. Robertson looks at the cultural and global consciousness it fosters, whereas White focuses on how globalization impacts the social relationships and structures that bind people and institutions. Especially, the concept of “Glocalization” suggested by Robertson was interesting to me. This means that local cultures actively reshape global influences to fit their own context. I reckon that the perspective shows globalization as the dynamic process that involves both global integration and the persistence of local identities.

Turning to types of globalization, there are 3 types: Economic, Political, and Cultural. Firstly, economic globalization emphasizes the unification of global financial markets and the harmonization of financial transactions. Secondly, political globalization encompasses the national strategies that unite countries politically, economically, and culturally. Lastly, the cultural dimension of globalization largely focuses on the technological and social factors driving the convergence of cultures. Three of them would be all crucial to improve the overall society, but I imagine that the foremost important one is “Cultural globalization.” Given that the pervasiveness of social media, various people with different cultures and languages have a sense of 'global citizenship' by sharing cultures. Therefore, globalization in a cultural way would more and more become key.

In conclusion, Roland Robertson and Harrison White offer different perspectives on globalization, with Robertson emphasizing cultural consciousness where local cultures adapt global influences, while White focuses on its impact on social relationships and institutional structures. And there are economic, political, and cultural globalization, among them I reckon that cultural thing would be main.
